What we tell you before you hire anyone
- Ask for a certificate of insurance. Any legitimate chimney company hands it over without hesitating.
- Ask for photos of the problem. If someone tells you your chimney needs a $9,000 rebuild but cannot show you a picture of why, get a second opinion.
- Be careful with door-knockers. A crew that shows up unannounced saying they noticed your chimney from the street is a pattern worth being skeptical about.
- Get the price in writing before work starts. Chimney work should be quoted as a fixed price, not billed hourly.
- Check that they are actually a chimney company. A lot of 'chimney repair' is done by general masons who do not understand flues, liners or venting.
